Street Vendor - Ave Jimenez - Candelaria

Watercolor 14x11
Unlike many of the street vendors in the Centro of Bogota, this gentleman seemed to be solidly middle class. He was dressed nicely and appeared to have a cultured look about him. Perhaps fallen on hard times.. forced out onto the street to make ends meet. This area is a busy urban nexus where public transportation and business offices are located. Usually bustling with human activity, noisy, and saturated with a richly textured olfactory jolt, this location really makes an impression and is electric - alive.

He still has that dignified look, good job. Are those boots he's wearing, or sandals?

The common trait of Expressionist art is that we are spectators when the subject confronts his own demons. The soul bared. The realization that whatever fears plague them, these abstractions will become real possibilities, or inevitabilities. ..Sometimes, "I like the colours" just isn't enough.

It looks like there are buckles and they reminded me of biker boots. I thought that would have been cool, cause I wear those.

    Gorgeous!
I like the way you've framed the aristocratic looking gentleman's head behind the wrought-iron gate. It effectively leads the eye into the main focal point.
The overall painting has a sense of sunny gaiety and liveliness.

Thx Jennifer... I will glady receive your generous complement. Focal point?? .. yeah the dignified man's look serves that purpose and the wrought iron brings it. Such a fun piece.. and those are kind of hit and miss.

    Bill,
    " I lIke the groovy colors!!!" ;D (sorry , couldn't resist.
OMG, I love this one. One of your best, imho.
He does have such an air of quiet dignity and you really captured that.
Watercolor is scary to me, but boy do you seem to have it mastered here.
    Well done!

Thanks Kay! I'll have to stop over and see what you're doing these days. Glad you like the groovy colors and splashes. I started doing this loose style back in the 70s... a few other watercolorists have a similar look and technique so it's hard to say who borrowed from who. But I must really give credit to my first teacher and best friend at the time - Paul... may he RIP!
